Patient safety comes first
Katherine West, BSN, MSEd, CIC
Katherine West of IC-EC in Virginia made it her mission to educate EMS staff in the process and methods of disease transmission and prevention, combining OSHA regulations with the Ryan White CARE Act and other standards and laws. Through her educational efforts, she helped ensure that EMS professionals spoke the same language as the infection preventionists in the hospitals and armed them with knowledge and information to handle exposure incidents effectively. Kathy expanded the reach of infection prevention in the EMS arena by publishing numerous articles in EMS trade and scientific journals, and her book, Infectious Disease Manual for Emergency Care Personnel. Her consulting experience included being called to Washington, DC, during the anthrax incidents in the Capitol.
