Throughout her three decades as an infection preventionist, Mary Walczak has drawn on her rich background in various aspects of nursing, quality management and nursing home administration. In 2006, as assistant director of infection control at the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mary instituted a project to reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). Under her leadership, the CLABSI program began in the ICU and then expanded into the emergency department as well as interventional radiology and dialysis. She has taken the program facility-wide working with a multidisciplinary team reducing the monthly CLABSI rate by as much as 71 percent in the areas where the program has already been implemented.
