The Chapter Leader Award provides the opportunity for chapters to recognize one of their members. At a minimum, it is recommended that the individual be:
- a member of current chapter for at least 2 years. If individual has relocated, their previous chapter can nominate them as long as the individual was a chapter member within the current calendar year and they meet all other criteria.
- a recognized leader. Examples include elected or appointed APIC chapter officer, member of APIC national committee, or leadership role in state/regional organization.
- instrumental in chapter activities. Examples include developing programs, increasing membership, improving chapter processes, training new board members, filling leadership positions, mentoring chapter members, participating in community activities related to infection prevention and control.
- Certified in Infection Prevention by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) unless certification has lapsed following retirement.
All nominees must have an active APIC and chapter membership to be considered for this award. Individuals can receive the award once per chapter.

The Chapter Leader Awards are typically presented during the Chapter Officers’ Meeting at the APIC Annual Conference. Each award recipient receives a certificate/plaque and is recognized on APIC.org and other APIC communication channels.
- APIC chapters may nominate one qualifying local chapter member for the Chapter Leader Award per cycle/year.
- The nomination can be submitted by any chapter member, but must be endorsed/approved by the chapter president. If the chapter president is being nominated for the award, then the immediate past president or president-elect must provide their approval. All nominations should be vetted amongst local chapter leadership prior to submission to APIC.
- Individuals cannot self-nominate.
- Online application with fields that align to each of the above criteria, including a list of nominee’s chapter activities.
