Maryland Nursing Home Receives Top Honors in Infection Control Video Contest

APIC 2021 Film Festival showcases creativity, humor in teaching best practices

Arlington, Va., June 29, 2021 – The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) announced that Asbury Methodist Village’s Wilson Health Care Center (Asbury), located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, is the grand prize recipient in APIC’s 11th annual Film Festival competition. The film was created by Wilson Health Care’s infection preventionist Tsi McLure, MSN, RN, BScN, who wanted to create an engaging, concise way to reinforce the importance of remaining vigilant during the height of the COVID pandemic.

Hindsight is 20/20!,” which premiered during APIC’s 48th Annual Conference, breaks down the chain of infection and encourages the spread of knowledge instead of germs. Structured as a classroom lesson, Asbury’s film illustrates key terms and players involved spreading infections. With the help of colorful sketches, viewers learn the “Six Links in the Chain of Infection” to successfully break the chain and protect patients.

“Asbury took an engaging approach to teach the basics of infection prevention. Ensuring that the healthcare workforce has this foundational knowledge is an essential component in a strong infection control program,” said 2021 APIC Annual Conference Chair Nicole Gualandi, MS/MPH, RN, CIC, FAPIC.  “As the world recovers from COVID-19, these film submissions convey an educational message while also inspiring joy and laughter in viewers.”

Each film engages viewers with humor, emotion, and/or music, all while tackling key themes in infection prevention and control. Diversey implores people to get vaccinated with a “Locomotion” parody film titled, “Vaccination,” while Delaware Valley Community Health Inc. cleverly demonstrates hand hygiene with “Bend & Wash,” a parody of Legally Blonde’s famous bend and snap.

An expert panel of judges selected the winning video for its creativity, originality, general appeal, significance to the infection prevention community, and educational message.
