Patient safety: Everybody’s business
Peggy Thompson, RN, BSN, CIC
Tampa General Hospital
The Joint Commission and the Florida State Health Department have praised Peggy Thompson for her successful infection prevention program, policies and procedures at Tampa General Hospital, where she has worked for two decades. In an effort to decrease the incidence of MRSA, Peggy was the first in the area to implement a surveillance program requiring cultures for all ICU patients and high risk admissions to the hospital, which saved the hospital $342,000 annually and reduced healthcare-associated MRSA by 25 percent. She also developed a program to offer influenza and pneumococcal vaccines to high risk patients, doubling the vaccines administered. In 2004, she was the recipient of the Nursing Excellence Award from the Florida Nursing Association for her service in infection prevention.
