Integrated Proactive Surveillance
Jennie L. Mayfield, BSN, MPH, CIC
St. Louis, MO
The primary focus of Clinical Epidemiologist Jennie Mayfield is oncology. Here, she has made a significant difference in the lives of patients living with cancer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. By instituting a MRSA surveillance program on the hospitals’ oncology units, Mayfield reduced the incidence of MRSA bloodstream infections from 1.9 cases per 1,000 line days to 0.6 in six months. Her program also led to the creation of room placement guidelines for oncology patients in order to reduce MRSA transmission. Mayfield then turned her sights on an increase in C. difficile in the blood and barrow transplant population. By combining the use of bleach for environment disinfection with in-service training for housekeeping and patient care staff, Mayfield was able to decrease C. difficile-associated diarrhea by 44 percent, from 8.5 cases per 1,000 patient days to 4.8.
