Baystate Health, Inc.
Preventing the spread of influenza is a priority for Mary Ellen Scales, manager of the infection control program at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Seeing that only 40 percent of the facility’s staff had been vaccinated prior to the fall of 2006, she developed and put into action the Flu Vaccine Champion Program to improve staff participation. The program consisted of 68 unit-based, trained staff members who motivated fellow employees in their areas to sign up and then administered the vaccine. Within two years, the center’s participation rate doubled to 80 percent. Mary Ellen presented her successful program at two national and state immunization conferences, also receiving an award for achievement in adult immunization from MASSPRO, a state organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality.
