When her community was faced with a limited supply of flu vaccine, Dianne Moroz, of Thompson Health, decided to implement a respiratory and hand hygiene awareness campaign in her local school district in an attempt to keep the number of flu cases at bay. The goal was for children to develop healthier habits and understand the importance of hand hygiene in preventing the spread of infection. As part of her interactive presentation, the children drew posters illustrating “How I Get Rif of Bad Germs that Make Me Sick” with the winner chosen by a hand hygiene mascot, Henry the Hand. This successful program inspired the city of Canandaigua, NY, to launch a comprehensive community-wide initiative titled “Keep Canandaigua Health: One Hand Wash at a Time” The program was presented to people of all ages and taught proper hygiene and local pandemic preparedness.
