Since first becoming involved in infection control in 1974, Harriett Pitt has pursued her vision to empower infection prevention and control professionals through mentorship and education. Her vision has made her a leader in her profession on local, state, national and international levels. Harriett is one of the founders of both the Greater LA APIC Chapter and the California APIC Coordinating Council (CACC). She has served on national APIC boards and on the Certification Board of Infection Control. Harriett has also conducted training sessions for Infection Control Professionals in Japan. As part of her volunteer work with CACC, Harriett has helped develop, coordinate, and teach an educational program for beginning ICPs. Now called the Foundations in Infection Control, the program has trained over 1,000 infection control professionals since its establishment in 1980. Her education model for the program combines large lecture sessions with small group sessions, evening support sessions, and long-term follow up. By addressing infection prevention issues across the continuum of care and promoting evidence-based practice, the Foundations class has continue to remain a highly relevant and successful program.
