Thomas C. Button, RN, BSN, NE-BC, CIC, FAPIC, is currently director infection prevention & control at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, MO. Children’s Mercy Hospital includes seven infection preventionists and one project specialist who provide infection prevention and control service to two acute care campuses and extensive emergency and ambulatory care services. It is the only comprehensive pediatric medical center and the only freestanding children’s hospital between St. Louis and Denver.
Tom has also been Corporate Director at Truman Medical Centers, Kansas City, MO, where a full one-third of uncompensated healthcare in the community is provided. He relocated from Dallas where he was director infection prevention & control at Parkland Health & Hospital System inclusive of Parkland Memorial Hospital, Parkland Women’s Health Centers, Dallas County Jail Services, and Parklands Community Oriented Primary Care Centers.
Tom obtained his BSN from Mount Mercy College, Cedar Rapids Iowa. In 1994 he obtained a graduate level certification in Managing Health Care Systems from the Florida International University College of Business in Miami, Florida. He has maintained certification in infection control since 2006 and his ANCC certification in nursing administration since October 1995.
Accomplishments in infection prevention include work with the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone during the fall of 2014, abstracts, articles or storyboards on VAP, outbreak investigation, SSI, environmental cleaning and hand hygiene. He has been a speaker at APIC DFW, Greater Kansas City APIC and Texas Society of Infection Control & Prevention. He has been active with APIC at both national and local chapters.
