Sanjay Saint, MD, MPH, APIC 2015 Distinguished Scientist Award winner and author of Preventing Hospital Infections: Real-World Problems, Realistic Solutions, led a TEDxTalk at the University of Michigan titled, “Improving Healthcare: Straight from the Heart.”
In a high-tech world, Dr. Saint stresses the importance of an easy, low-tech solution to preventing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs): handwashing.
“Despite knowing the importance of handwashing for a long time,” Dr. Saint asks, “Why are doctors and nurses not washing their hands?”
Dr. Saint continues by identifying and discussing the barriers to changing hand hygiene behavior. He stresses the importance of changing the “culture of mediocrity” surrounding hand hygiene and infection prevention. Dr. Sanjay Saint argues that the social learning that guides our behavior in institutions like grocery stores can be used to improve the quality of healthcare in our hospitals.
