APIC provided input to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on the FY 2018 Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed rule. APIC’s recommendations included supporting proposals to include patient disability and medical complexity factors in the healthcare-associated infection measures in the Hospital-Acquired Condition (HAC) Reduction Program, and to remove the PSI 90 composite measure in the Value-Based Purchasing program beginning in FY 2019. APIC did not support including a ventilator-associated events (VAE) measure or additional HAI measures in the HAC Reduction Program at this time. APIC also opposed a CMS proposal to make Accrediting Organizations’ survey results and Plans of Correction publicly available, and instead advocated for positive approaches to call attention to healthcare improvement efforts and provide consistent and useful information to help patients make good healthcare choices.
