APIC submits comments on Health IT burden

APIC submitted comments to the HHS Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology on its draft Strategy on Reducing Burden Relating to the Use of Health IT and EHRs. The strategy, mandated by the 21st Century Cures Act, outlines three overarching goals designed to reduce clinician burden:

1.Reduce the effort and time required to record health information in electronic health records for clinicians;

2.Reduce the effort and time required to meet regulatory reporting requirements for clinicians, hospitals, and healthcare organizations; and

3.Improve the functionality and intuitiveness (ease of use) of EHRs.

APIC’s comments focus on ensuring valid data transfer through appropriate use of limited “copy and paste” functions and supporting auto-populating functions, recommending inclusion of all users and stakeholders in HIT improvement efforts, and improving the electronic transfer of reportable communicable disease and emerging infectious pathogen data from all care settings to local and state health departments.
