As it prepares to revise the hospital quality star rating system in 2020, CMS released a summary report on stakeholder input. Although stakeholders did not reach consensus, several common themes emerged, including:
- CMS should consider how Star Ratings are used by stakeholders when updating how they are calculated or presented.
- CMS should engage in outreach to patients to increase awareness of Hospital Compare and Star Ratings.
- CMS should consider changes that would improve the predictability and stability of Star Ratings.
- New methodologies should ensure patients can make meaningful comparisons across hospitals.
