CMS releases revised Long-Term Care requirements

The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the first comprehensive revision to Long-Term Care conditions of participation since 1991. The revision includes an expansion of infection prevention and control conditions, including requiring facilities to develop an Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) that includes an Antibiotic Stewardship Program. The facility must designate one or more infection prevention and control officers, called infection preventionists (IPs), who will have major responsibility for the IPCP, and must have specialized training. APIC will provide a thorough summary of the infection prevention provisions of the final rule when it is available. Read APIC’s comments on the CMS proposed rule.
