This three-day class for the proficient and advanced Infection Preventionist focuses on three areas:
Day 1: Negotiation and Conflict Resolution
This interactive program will focus on how to successfully manage conflicts by understanding why conflicts are caused, building productive relationships, and developing meaningful conversations. Learn how to effectively identify tactics and strategies to negotiate your terms successfully in areas such as budgeting, staffing, process implementation, and managing outside contractors (for construction and renovation projects).
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the basic principles and practices of negotiation and coalition building
- Analyze and effectively prepare for single and multi-party negotiations
- Employ successful negotiation strategies
- Understand the fundamental concepts of conflict management
- Acquire specific tactical approaches to conflict situations
- Apply successful communication strategies to increase effectiveness in conflict conversations
Day 2: Construction and Renovation
At some point, every facility will undergo some level of construction. This class aims to help Infection Preventionists understand all phases of construction and renovation projects so that they may provide better input into those projects, employ effective dust control measures, and develop a comprehensive Infection Control Program.
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify his/her role in construction and renovation projects
- Describe the regulatory agencies that impact infection prevention during projects
- Explain how those agencies impact infection control policies
- Describe how they will communicate those policies to staff, contractors, administrators
- Explain all phases of construction and renovation projects and the role of Infection Control in each phase
- Read blueprints
- Analyze building materials, fixtures, and finishes for appropriateness from an Infection Control Perspective
- Apply tools, such as the ICRA, to construction projects
- Summarize the problems that dust, water, and air present during construction and renovation projects
- Plan how he/she will monitor for dust, water, and air
- Identify problems presented by water damage (e.g., flood) and how to mitigate them
- Explain trends in construction and renovation
Day 3: Budget, Finance, and the Infection Prevention Program
Like it or not, healthcare has become a business. Resources are scarce and stretched to the breaking point. Doing more with less is routine. Infection control practitioners need to understand how to navigate their way through a variety of challenges in order to make the case for investments in reducing infections. This program will focus on the following areas and will give participants a sound grounding in the business concepts essential to making their case:
- The General Business Model
- Key financial concepts
- Financial decision tools
- Creating the Business Case
- The changing financial environment in healthcare
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the characteristic and behaviors of revenues and expenses
- Use a variety of financial tools to demonstrate the business benefits of investment in infection control
- Identify the essential elements of a sound business proposal
- Describe the financial impact of the emerging emphasis on population health
Stacey Lee. JD
The John Hopkins Carey Business School
Stacey Lee is an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School. She also holds a joint appointment at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. Stacey teaches MBA and level executive negotiation courses and well as courses in business and health law.
Prior to entering academia, Stacey practiced law for over ten years. She began as a securities litigator and later became in-house counsel for two of the country’s largest healthcare corporations. Stacey also served as the senior regulatory specialist for America’s Health Insurance Plans, the United States’ largest national healthcare trade association.
Since joining the Carey faculty in 2008, Stacey’s research interests have focused on pharmaceutical manufacturers’ international and domestic influence on the access to medicines. Her work has been published in the Yale Journal Health Policy Law & Ethics, Georgetown Journal of International Law, the Annals of Health Law Journal, and the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy. She was the Berman Institute Faculty Fellow in the Greenwall Fellowship in Bioethics and Health Policy from 2011 – 2012 and in 2012 and 2014 the graduating Johns Hopkins MPH/MBA cohorts awarded Stacey the Teaching Excellence Award for her negotiation and business law courses.
Stacey earned her law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law and a BBA in Management from Loyola University of Maryland.
Lewis Johnson, MS, CIH
Industrial Hygienist, Epidemiology/Infection Prevention
Lee Memorial Health System
Lewis Johnson is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with the Lee Memorial Health System Epidemiology/Infection Prevention department. His responsibilities include designing and validating techniques to manage patient exposure to aerosol contamination from construction, renovation and other dust generating activities, as well as IAQ surveillance, occupational exposure assessments, and management of waterborne pathogens. Mr. Johnson has 30 years of experience training contractors and project consultants in contamination control relating to asbestos, lead, and mold in buildings; as well as presentations to industrial hygienists, infection preventionists, and other professionals at annual and regional conferences. Mr. Johnson has a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Education from Bowling Green State University, and a Master of Science in Industrial Health from the University of Michigan.
Mary Alice Lavin, RN, MJ, CIC, RN, MJ, CIC

Mary Alice Lavin graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Loyola University Chicago School of Law with a Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law. With more than 30 years experience in infection prevention and control, she has worked in a variety of settings. Currently she is a consultant contracted with APIC Consulting for the Illinois Department of Public Health Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded Infection Control Assessment and Response grant. A member of APIC since 1983, Mary Alice is a Fellow of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, and has been Certified in Infection Control since 1984. She has served as the Nominating Chair and President of the Chicago Chapter of APIC and currently holds the position of Chapter Legislative Representative. Mary Alice is the Co-Chair of the APIC Public Policy Committee. She has presented on topics including infection control aspects of construction/renovation, ambulatory care, MRSA, CRE, influenza, and regulatory issues. Mary Alice has worked collaboratively for 14 years with the local and state health departments in the prevention and control of communicable diseases in healthcare organizations.

William J. (Bill) Ward, Jr., MBA is an associate professor of health finance and management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, an associate professor of nursing at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the former Director of the Master of Health Administration Degree Program and the Sommer Scholars Public Health Leadership Program.
He is a guest lecturer at Singapore Management University where he teaches in their week-long J&J-sponsored hospital management program. For over 20 years, he taught financial management at the University of Maryland’s School of Nursing and continues to guest lecture there.
Prior to his 20-year-long academic career, Ward held operational and financial executive positions in healthcare, most recently as chief operating officer of what is now the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Since leaving Bayview, he has provided a variety of consultative services throughout the United States and has worked on projects overseas in the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. He serves on the Boards of several health systems in the US and the UAE. Professional affiliations include the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the American College of Healthcare Executives,
Ward has authored numerous articles on a variety of healthcare operational, financial and quality topics and is a frequent speaker on these same topics. He co-authored the Research Series monograph “Building a Financial Case for Clinical Improvement” for the Voluntary Hospitals of America. His article, “Building the Business Case for Clinical Quality,” was featured in HFM, the journal of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and “The Role of Hospital Boards in Improving Quality,” was published in Garden State Focus, the journal of the New Jersey Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Most recently, he co-authored “Cost-Effectiveness of a Quality Improvement Programme to Reduce Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections in Intensive Care Units in the USA,” which was published in BMJ Open, in September, 2014. His third textbook, Healthcare Budgeting and Financial Management, will be published later this year.
Rich Vogel, MS, CIC
Infection Control Specialist, Infection Prevention and Control
Richard Vogel is currently the Infection Control Specialist at New York Presbyterian, a position he has held since 2006. Among his responsibilities is coordinating the Infection Control during Construction program, which includes participation in planning, development and construction for all renovation and new construction projects. This program was developed in order to reduce the risk of healthcare associate infections or other adverse health effects from construction. Over the past 10 years, Richard has been involved in over 1000 construction and renovation projects at NewYork Presbyterian.
Richard’s healthcare career has spanned over 40 years. He started his career as a Clinical Microbiologist at the then Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and now has been involved in Infection Control for over 30 years. Mr. Vogel is a member of APIC and has been Certified in Infection Control since 1984, the first year it was awarded. He received a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Massachusetts and a M.S. in Biology from New York University. Recently Richard was the Editor and a contributor for the APIC Infection Prevention Manual for Construction and Renovation. In addition, Richard has given presentations on both the local and national levels on various infection control topics.

Accreditation, CEUs and Evaluation:
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (APIC) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).
Course evaluations will be sent via an online link to the email address on file within 7 business days of the conclusion of the education program. Upon receipt, all evaluations must be completed within 30 days. After satisfying all evaluation requirements, a certificate of completion will be available to print and/or for your records indicating CEUs.
Accredited status does not imply endorsement by APIC or the American Nurses Credentialing Center of any commercial products displayed or discussed in conjunction with an educational activity.
