The APIC/SHEA Joint Leadership Development Course is an exclusive, high-level, 3-day interactive learning experience that will provide participants with skills they need for effective infection prevention and control (IPC) leadership in their facility.
Developed in partnership with the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), this program provides an opportunity for infection preventionists (IPs) and healthcare epidemiologists (HEs) from facilities of all types to partner with each other and/or their administrators (quality directors, chiefs of nursing or medicine, patient safety directors, etc.), or others crucial to the shared leadership to facility or system-wide IPC for a truly unique learning experience. This interactive learning course focuses on the key concepts of leadership, decision-making, team-building, culture management, and influence.
Who Should Attend
APIC and SHEA are working together to build a world without infection–and further developing shared leadership with IPs and HEs. Quality directors, IPs, HEs, and other healthcare administrators/executives will build a more effective team-based environment. Developing the knowledge and insight as co-leaders needed to impact the future of infection prevention is key to our success. The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) is a professional society that improves public health by establishing infection prevention measures and supporting antibiotic stewardship among healthcare providers. They do this by educating the next generation, leading research studies, translating research into clinical practice, developing smart policy, promoting antibiotic stewardship, and advancing and educating the field of healthcare epidemiology.
About the AAPL

About the Course
Using the results from the comprehensive CPI Assessment, this module reviews the characteristics, motivations, and thinking-styles of the group. Participants will get a detailed view of their strengths and opportunities for growth while learning the mechanisms for managing themselves and others. They’ll learn how to build and maintain a culture of trust in their facility while maximizing their organization’s goals and outcomes.
The American Association of Physician Leadership’s CPI 260 is an online assessment which provides a high-level tool for analyzing the unique competencies required for healthcare workers. Based on a reliable and valid sample of 6000 senior executives, this assessment measures concepts such as the use of evidence-based practices, risk tolerance and more.

About the Program
In this interactive, transformative workshop, participants will gain the information, skills, and resources to build a team-based healthcare organization. Using the knowledge gained in this module, they will learn how to select, orient, train, and reward their staff in order to design and deliver care in a more effective team-based environment. A team development survey will be used to provide data on effectiveness, and interactive experiences–such as role-playing and movie vignettes–will be used to reinforce the concepts learned.

- Understand the value of commitment to team-based healthcare and learn how to foster it.
- Gain techniques for integrating new team members.
- Transform conflict situations into constructive ones.

Not Solely a Clinician Anymore

About the Program
Becoming a leader in healthcare requires practitioners to develop a new mindset around beliefs, behaviors, and results that will define their role beyond simply their clinical expertise and reputation. In order to meet these challenges, practitioners must gain the skills that allow them to function as leaders, influencers, and “right thinkers.” This interactive module includes lectures and group work, and covers theory and best practices. Pre-work in form of a confidential email sent to participants in advance of the session allows or a closer focus on the attendees’ desired outcomes.

- Tools and resources to help participants forge a leadership identity that focuses on results.

What does the registration fee include?
Registration fees for the APIC/SHEA Joint Leadership Course include the AAPL’s CPI 260, a comprehensive personality assessment tool for leaders and executives. Normally priced at $175, we are providing this key component of the learning curriculum free to all participants for our inaugural program.
Is there pre-work for this course?
Yes. To ensure that the onsite experience is fully maximized, participants are asked to participate in some activities before the event, namely: completing the complimentary CPI260 assessment and a confidential questionnaire sent in the form of an email.
Do I have to attend with my IP and/or physician partner?
While the curriculum has been optimized for the paired learning experience for IPs and physicians, you can still register as a solo participant without losing any of the educational or experiential value. You will still get the same exceptional learning and leadership skills that your career needs to advance.
APIC is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).
Contact Hours: Attendees will be able to earn up to 21 hour-for-hour contact hour credits for this activity, and can only be obtained through the completion of the online evaluation.
Course evaluations will be available via an online link provided in course materials. All evaluations must be completed within 30 days. After satisfying all evaluation requirements, a certificate of completion will be available to print and/or for your records indicating contact hours.
Accredited status does not imply endorsement by APIC or the American Nurses Credentialing Center of any commercial products displayed or discussed in conjunction with an educational activity. While APIC is approved to provide contact hours, APIC’s educational programs may be eligible for continuing education units from other accrediting bodies. Please contact the accrediting body for more information on eligibility requirements and submission instructions.

A $75 cancellation fee will be charged to all canceled registrations. Cancellations must be in writing and received via fax or email no later than 5 business days prior to the start of the course. No refunds or credits/transfers will be granted after this deadline. Participants who are “no shows” will not be granted a refund or credit/transfer of registration fees.
