Frances Slater Feltovich served as APIC president in 1998.

Read Frances’ presidential address.

In celebration of APIC’s 40th anniversary, Frances shared what APIC has meant to her:

I believe that APIC is the only professional organization dedicated to the advancement of the infection prevention and control profession, as well as the first professional organization aimed at improving healthcare quality and patient safety. I am proud and have professionally benefited from my active involvement in this esteemed organization, having served as APIC 1998 President, 2000 and 2001 APIC Research Foundation President, and 2010 CBIC President, in addition to the many years serving on APIC committees and as a member of leadership at APIC-Houston. I have grown professionally through my service to APIC and its members.

Frances reflected on some of APIC’s major achievements during her term of office:

As an organization, APIC had several active committees such as the Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC), now called Public Policy and a Board appointed committee, the Approvership Committee and an active Research Foundation.

  1. The GAC was successful in providing effective testimony against OSHA’s Proposed TB Rule. Also testifying against the rule were many APIC members representing either their chapter or hospital and a member of the American Thoracic Society/American Lung Association. The Rule did not pass.
  2. APIC achieved approvership status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation to provide nursing continuing education credits for its educational programs.
  3. The APIC Board recognized Dennis Brimhall, 1998 President of the Research Foundation, as the first recipient of the STAR award for his leadership in raising $1 million for developing the Research Foundation Endowment. Dennis was instrumental in fostering strong partnerships with industry to accomplish the $1 million goal.
