New resource: Infection prevention in ambulatory care during disasters

Infection Prevention for Ambulatory Care Centers during Disasters, is now available as a free online download. Created and revised by the APIC Emergency Preparedness Committee, this document provides infection prevention recommendations and resources for the development of an emergency management plan that includes operational expansion in the event of patient surges. 

During disasters, there is increased risk for infection transmission in ambulatory care centers. When hospitals cannot absorb patient influx during a disaster, ambulatory care centers, such as surgery, diagnostic, and dialysis centers, may need to expand their operations to help address patient surge in the community. The new guide covers: 

  • Operational expansion in the event of patient surges

  • Patient scheduling
  • Triage and surveillance, and
  • Occupational health issues
