APIC 2018 Film Festival winner demonstrates proper surgical attire to keep patients safe

Minneapolis, June 13, 2018 – The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) announced Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa as the winner of its eighth annual Film Festival competition, to be awarded during APIC’s 45th Annual Conference. The video entitled “KPSRO Surgical Attire,” emphasizes the importance of proper surgical dress.

Kaiser Permanente’s black and white silent film – produced in fast motion with a dramatic Hollywood soundtrack – takes a humorous approach to the rules of surgical attire. We see a man with a long fake beard attempting to don a mask, cover a full head of clown hair, and trim his gorilla hair. This lighthearted video entertains the viewers while also placing emphasis on surgical attire that is necessary to keep patients safe.

“Using humor to highlight necessary prevention measures as Kaiser Permanente has done is a good way to educate the team and remind everyone to speak up for patient safety,” said 2018 APIC President, Janet Haas, PhD, RN, CIC, FSHEA, FAPIC. “With the number of surgical procedures on the rise, preventing surgical site infections is an important priority.”

An expert panel of judges selected the winning video for its creativity, originality, general appeal, significance to the infection prevention community, and entertaining and educational message.

Other Film Festival submissions used music, humor, and emotional messages to draw attention to their valuable themes regarding patient health and infection prevention. Northeastern University parodied famous jazz musician Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” in their video “Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia Prevention Initiative (HAPPI)” to indicate the importance of patients brushing their teeth and rinsing with Antiseptic mouthwash to reduce the risk of NV-HAP.
