Updated safe injection practices position paper

APIC updated the position paper: Safe injection, infusion, and medication vial practices in health care (2016), which replaces the previous 2010 paper. The transmission of bloodborne viruses and other microbial pathogens to patients during routine healthcare procedures continues to occur because of the use of improper injection, infusion, medication vial, and point-of-care testing practices by healthcare personnel (HCP). These unsafe practices occur in various clinical settings throughout the United States and result in unacceptable and devastating events for patients. This position paper provides guidance on best practices for infection preventionists and other HCP.
