APIC Statement on Proposed White House Committee to Veto NIH Research Grants

Arlington, VA, September 22, 2026 – The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) strongly opposes a proposed executive order that would give a committee of political appointees the power to veto National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants. According to news reports, the panel could block awards that do not align with the Administration’s political priorities.

NIH’s independent peer review, in which scientific experts judge proposals on their merit, has produced much of the evidence infection preventionists use every day to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), combat antimicrobial resistance, and respond to emerging diseases. With more than 680,000 HAIs occurring in U.S. hospitals each year, that research cannot be subject to political approval.

A political veto would delay critical studies, drive researchers away from infectious disease science, and erode trust in the evidence that guides patient care. Earlier this year, lawmakers from both parties blocked a similar proposal. APIC urges Congress to do so again.

“Research that protects patients should be judged on evidence, not politics,” said Kathy Ward, RN, BSN, MPH, FAPIC, CIC, 2026 APIC President. “Infection preventionists depend on NIH science to stop outbreaks and keep patients safe. The Administration should withdraw this proposal and leave funding decisions to scientific experts.”
