NHSN update on CLABSI SIRs

After identifying an error in development of the 2015 CLABSI models used for SIR calculations, the corrected 2015 CLABSI models for acute care hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, and critical access hospitals are now complete. The NHSN team verified the implementation of these models for the purposes of CMS Quality Reporting Programs, and CDC has sent the CLABSI SIR files, produced using the corrected models, to CMS for the time period 2015Q1 thru 2016Q4. Please note that CMS was informed of the CLABSI error as soon as it was discovered, and these data have not and will not affect reimbursement.

At this time, the NHSN team is in the process of updating the NHSN SIR Guide and implementing the updated models in the NHSN application. We expect to complete this work in the coming weeks.

CDC staff has asked APIC to keep them informed about members’ questions and concerns so that support can be provided quickly. Specific NHSN questions related to CLABSI rebaseline or other technical issues should be referred to the NHSN help desk at NHSN@cdc.gov. APIC will continue to work proactively with CDC staff to regularly discuss any concerns or issues related to NHSN. Read May 23, 2017 CDC memo to NHSN users.
