Managing infection prevention and control (IPC) in long-term care settings presents a unique set of challenges and issues.

About the Course

This course provides the foundation required for the role of the infection preventionist (IP) and the practice(s) of being an effective IP in a long-term care setting.  It includes creating and managing successful IPC programs and mitigating risk at your facility. This course also covers Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) required topics.

(Attendance is mandatory for the 2.5-day training)

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the responsibilities of an IP and the role in managing the IPC program. 
  • Identify skilled nursing IPC requirements.
  • Identify how to assess IP competency.
  • Describe the role of surveillance in the IPC program and identify practical applications of recommended practices that can be utilized by the IP in their surveillance program.
  • Understand the basics of microbiology, multi-drug resistant organisms, Clostridioides difficile and risk factors.
  • Understand and create a vaccination plan.

Course Components

To earn the Essentials in Long-Term Care Certificate and available CEs, participants must complete all program components:

  • 2.5 days of live training led by experienced instructors.
  • Eleven online modules with knowledge checks and a final exam to reinforce learning.

Cancellation and Substitution Policy

All registration cancellations and refund requests must be sent via email to education@apic.org 15 calendar days prior to the course start date. Any request received within 14 calendar days of the course start date will be charged a $75 administrative fee. Once you have activated your learning system or accessed your online education account, a registration can no longer be refunded.
